What helped the reform?
There was no end to the amount of changes Horace Mann made to the school system and how he did it. First off, he built so many schools. These schools were huge changes because they were public. To attend private schools that were there, parents would have to pay for their child to attend. This created an issue because many children and their families could not afford to go to school. So their children worked on the farms and often caused trouble. Some of these children stole, started fires, and littered excessively. Now with the public school started by Mann, all the children can go to school like any other.
Mann, being a member of the school board also raised the time students were in school. Instead of going to school for many weeks, students would go to school for 6 months. For all the time students spent in school, that's how much less time the students would work on farms. Mann also set up special training schools for the teacher. Mann believed that if the teachers were better trained and educated, the quality of education for the students would improve.
Three requirements that Horace made for a proper education were absolutely necessary. Firstly, Horace believed that all public schools should be free and should be supported by taxes. This was made official by a vote in the mid 1800s. Also, teachers should be highly trained as mentioned. Lastly, and most importantly, children are required to attend school. This is most important because this reform emphasizes the quality of teachers and changes to education. This is all pointless if children won't attend school, so therefore, children must go to school so that they can be bright children and help the future of their country.
For women's education, Beecher was the main woman to make changes. She wrote a book that showed information about how the country viewed women and how they should view women. Beecher believes that people don't give women the opportunity to do what they can at their full potential such as teaching. She states that the teaching profession is more suited for women than men. This was her job in persuading change in the schools.
