Horace Mann's changes to the education system are still in effect today. If Mann had not made the changes that he did then schools
would probably still be only for those that could afford it. There would probably only be private schools. In the short term, Mann allowed education to become more widely accessible to the poor. In addition others like Catharine Beecher allowed education to be accessible to others such as women.
These changes that occurred in the movement were beneficial in the long run as we can see. Even schools back then were modified to public schools slowly allowing everyone else to attend school. The board of Education even made it a requirement that a child must go to school for a certain number of moths, and this is still present today. Special schools for the blind and deaf started popping up everywhere, and many of these schools have grown in size. The women's large presence as teachers in the education system today is due to the efforts of Catharine Beecher. A lot of the quality of the public school system today is due to the efforts of Horace Mann. The long term and short term effects of the Education Reform Movement indicate that it was a success since many of the changes are still in place today.
I would absolutely be involved in the modification of education if I was alive during the movement. One of the main reasons is because I believe in equality. At that time, education was mostly for the rich. The reason for this was that schools were only private and only certain people could afford sending their children to private schools. The poor children had to work on their parents' farms all year long, so they never really received a proper education. All children no matter how poor should have access to an equal education like the rich. This is exactly why I would want to be involved in the reformation of education. The second reason why I would want to be involved is that to have a great education system like today requires a lot of work and change. This occurred during the Education Reform Movement and it would be very interesting to see the changes that occurred to make the system what it is today. The third reason why I would be involved is that my uncle in India started a school for deaf and mute children. Whenever I go to India I am very interested to see the work that he does. If I had the opportunity I would want to see how these schools for the blind and deaf first came about in the 1800s and how they first taught them. The education techniques have progressed a lot through the years, but it would be interesting to see how the first techniques were developed and what they were.
